Genevia Technologies as a workplace
What’s our company culture and employer value proposition like? What do our people like about Genevia?
First, it’s important to understand why our company culture matters to us. We want to consistently produce very high quality bioinformatics services to our global clientele and become one of the leading bioinformatics service providers across the globe. Additionally, we have a passion for building a good place to work for each and every one of us, and our aim is to become the best possible place for bioinformatics professionals to work.
Company culture is an elusive subject and as we keep growing, it’s becoming increasingly important to define what it means for us. As we have people from different nationalities and cultures, we want to be able to offer an environment where people can come and shine as they are. This is also why we wanted to write down our EVP, or Employer Value Proposition, to showcase what our people like about Genevia.
"At Genevia, our two core values are simple: being a great place to work and excelling in customer success. We believe that when employees are happy and feel valued, they become more engaged and motivated, which translates into exceptional service for our clients. Satisfied clients are more likely to become loyal clients, which again translates into strong financial performance. This enables us to invest even more in our people, enhancing their experience and making them happier. As a bioinformatics service provider, this cycle of mutual growth and improvement is why Genevia is committed to becoming the best place for bioinformaticians to work."
- Arttu Haapalainen, Head of Talent Acquisition & Employer Branding
Our Employer Value Proposition (EVP)
-
At Genevia, we are proud to have some of the most skilled experts in the field of bioinformatics in our team. Our company culture is based on trust, which gives our people the autonomy and genuine opportunity to take ownership of their work.
While much of the work can be independent, there’s always strong peer support available. We’ve built a complementary team with a diverse range of expertise—whether in various fields of biology or in different technologies—ensuring that our people can always turn to colleagues for guidance and knowledge-sharing.
-
As a service provider, variety is at the core of what we do. Our client portfolio spans top academic institutions and biotech companies across the globe. The range of projects we handle is broad, covering all aspects of life science research where bioinformatics is applied. Typically, each team member manages multiple projects, providing continuous exposure to different fields of biology and diverse data types.
This variety creates ongoing learning opportunities, supported by access to cutting-edge tools and technologies. We also provide a dedicated HPC environment and immediate IT support to ensure smooth workflows, as we believe this helps us deliver the quality service our valued clients deserve.
-
We are committed to providing our people with the resources and opportunities to grow—whether that’s expanding their technical skills or developing in other areas. Our project allocation often includes a day or two each month for personal study or skill development, ensuring our team can continually enhance their expertise.
As needs arise, we offer opportunities for either promotion or for a completely different type of role. As a rapidly growing company, the need to fill new types of positions - including managerial positions - regularly arises. We strongly prefer to fill managerial positions by existing employees and we have done that in the past.
-
In modern working life, especially in a remote-first organization, flexibility can mean different things to different people. Some may prefer working in the office, while others enjoy working remotely. Some might have children and need to juggle chauffeuring duties. We aim to be adaptable, and for us, flexibility means predictable and adjustable working hours, as well as the option to combine remote work and on-site office work, or in most positions, the ability to work fully remotely within the European timezone.
We recognize the importance of a healthy work-life balance. Taking breaks, pursuing hobbies, going on vacations, and chatting with colleagues is encouraged. Most of our people come from academia, and unlike the demanding pace there, we don’t expect anyone to work overtime, on weekends, or during holidays.
-
We know we’re not perfect—and we don’t pretend to be. But we are committed to doing our best and continually improving. What does this mean?
For client work, it means staying up to date with the latest industry trends and new technologies. It means regularly dedicating time to self-development and finding ways to enhance our services.
For our people, it means measuring employee satisfaction and genuinely listening to what everyone has to say. It means adjusting how we work and shaping our culture with the goal of becoming a little better every day.

"What I like most about Genevia is that I get to work on a wide variety of projects, clients, and data types. The projects are very stimulating; client requests are often challenging, which means I have to find new solutions and continuously learn and study.
There are also many tools available to explore, depending on the biological question. It’s not just about solving problems—it's also about expanding my expertise and being part of groundbreaking research."
- Giulia Barbiera, PhD, Scientific Project Manager
"Working as a contractor for Genevia has been a great experience. The company's forward-thinking approach, offering full remote work and flexible hours, has opened doors for those of us living outside Finland to work with exciting and meaningful data while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
It's empowering to take full ownership of my projects, from analyzing data to leading regular client meetings. Working remotely, you could sometimes miss having “live colleagues”, however, Genevia has found a great solution for that. They organize remote work weeks in locations across Europe, bringing us together for collaborative workshops and social activities."
- Fredrik Salmén, PhD, Scientific Project Manager
"At Genevia, I love two things above all: team spirit and work-life balance. Despite the mostly remote work setting, everyone is so supportive and friendly. Even when meeting teammates for the first time in person, they never feel strangers.
For the first time, I also feel like my work-life balance is truly respected, which is particularly important to me as a parent of two young children. I also feel like that our small size is a big advantage, since it offers direct access to management and cross-departmental collaboration possibilities."
- Grigorios Georgolopoulos, PhD, Bioinformatics Team Lead
"I’ve been a happy Genevian already since 2015. During this time I’ve witnessed how the company has evolved from a tiny, office-based start-up company into a great working place for a fairly large number of bioinformatics specialists working from different parts of Europe.
We have a highly skilled team with diverse expertises, and everyone is always happy to share their knowledge and help the other team members. And not just that, all my colleagues are wonderful people and fun to spend time with also out of office hours! We get opportunities for that when we’re having company events in Tampere or on our remote co-working weeks at some nice location.
What I value perhaps most about working at Genevia is that I find the work very meaningful, as I’m able to participate and help our clients in highly interesting and challenging projects, for example those related to cancer or other drug development.
The work also involves constant learning of new things due to continuously developing technologies, which I like a lot. Continuous learning is also a prerequisite for efficient working at high standards in this rapidly developing field. That’s why it’s very important and special that at Genevia we can allocate a good amount of working time for self development on a weekly basis."
- Reija Hieta, PhD, Senior Bioinformatician
"I appreciate the collaborative atmosphere. When a client project necessitates unfamiliar expertise, we learn and adapt. If the company holds experience that I lack, I’m supported by colleagues who are more than willing to help. In academia, personal career pressures sometimes hinder collaboration, but here, teamwork takes precedence."
- Henry Barton, PhD, Scientific Project Manager, HPC Administrator
